Beside this relatively harmless diseases an occasionally occurring accident is much more important : the backbone verse dipping. In wood of small strength, approximately in the walls of a light cabinet, the worm must hold itself exactly in the center of the material and take possible curves (e.g. the corner rear wall side panel) extraordinarily sharply. On this occasion the backbone verse dipping occurs. The worm continues to be then in right-angled position and can not move, cannot feed and has to die of hunger, if it is not freed within 24 to 28 hours.
For this purpose one takes the piece of furniture apart concerned carefully, seizes the worm at front and back part and bends it straight back from 90 degrees to 180 degrees.
Reproduction: The reproduction of the wood worm lets the science grope completely in the dark. That does not surprise anybody, who tried to photograph the inside of a tree - for examplel. At the University of Chicago they breeded wood worms outside the door, nourished with matches (too thin to bore into) and hoped to be able to observe now the reproduction. Could be that the worms were shy, or that diet of matches lacked to important active substances - anyhow, nothing occurred. One has to assum that the wood worm increases only to a few population under normal conditions, too. In the biological institute at Moscow they put in 1898 two animals into a cabinet and divided this 1931-1937 cutting each millimeter. They found no more than the two worms of 1898. Additionally it was seen that it has been two males, which reduces the value of the experiment in opinion of some researchers somewhat.
The Mclntosh institute in Edinburgh tried 1954 to approach the solution of the problem from the acoustic side. They promised everyone a total of 1000 Pound of Sterling, to which it would succeed to take up the loving bell of the wood worm on tone carriers. Until today nobody has announced, - except a swindler, who could be exposed however soon. He had taken up the loving bell of a moth (tinea sacitella). Thus it remains being waiting whether the attempts have success, which Professor Watschenbrunner executes on behalf of the Munich forest-scientific academy. He had referred to how many humans do not see the forest because of lots of trees, and suggested the development of transparent wood. If this should succeed, then probably the frozen problem of wood worm reproduction could be researched.

Epilog : If we compare the small range of this investigation with that thick books, which were written e.g. about the common housefly (musca domestica), we have to be astonished. It is a shame that mankind could not collect any more knowledge in many thousands of years about their most faithful comrades. However, the more brightly radiates the fame of those men, which gave us our poor knowledge - as for instance brother Benediktus of St. Gallen.
The message is still unconfirmed, the Vatican has the intention just to make brother Benedikt a holy man and protection patron of the tinysmall animal research - contrary to the Swiss monks, which cannot forgive after almost 900 years the escape from the monastery to the ingenious monk yet.
There is still much to do : we do not know anything about the spirit and the soul of the wood worm. It is to assume (remember the worm of the art dealer at Amsterdam) that in this area still some surprise is awaiting.

Here is a great chance for the amateur, the private animal friend, who lives with his/her worm in the same room. From them we expect the worm-psychological realizations of the future.
